PRISONER ESCAPES BY JUMPING FROM A TRAIN.
fSI TELEGBAPH— PBESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, 11th April. A prisoner named Josoph Christie, seventeen years of age, who was recently sentenced to a term of imprisonment by the Supreme Court in Dunedin for bieaking and -entering and theft, jumped from this afternoon's express when passing Woodlands. This prisoner and another who is serving five years were in charge of Principal Warder Kearney. Christie obtained permission to go to the lavatory, but instead of doing so he opened the dcor of the carriage and jumped out. It is stated that ho landed on his ieet and made off. No time was lost by the prison authorities in taking steps to effect a recapture, and motor •caa's were employed to search the scene without delay. Christie has escaped no less than four times from the Burnham Industrial School. So far there is no news of his capture.
