MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W. G. Siddell, S.M. . A iirst-offending inebriate was convicted and discharged. Geo. Seymour Carter, who had been remanded for sentence on a charge of theft of knives, forks, and spoons, valued at 9s, the property of John Hall Flockton, was Cued 20s, with two witnesses' expenses (18s). The alternative was soveu days' imprisonment. Geo. F. Beaumont, charged with failing to support his illegitimate child, was remanded till the Ist May. Bail was allowed in a sum of £60, in two sureties o£ £30 each. Mr. Il'.I 1 '. E. Ward appeared for the defendant. In the case- of John Mills, alias Henderson, who appeared on remand charged (1) with- forging the na^e of J. Brougham to a_ money order* telegram tor £5 and uttering the same to Jos. Hy. Owen, (2) with receiving a money order telegram for £5, well knowing the same to have been stolen, Chief Detective Broberg stated that as the principal witness in the ease was not available, he would offer no evidence, on the understanding that the charge could be brought again if the witness was located. The charge was withdrawn by leave o£ the court. Annie Potersen, charged with using an instrument for an unlawful purpose, was further remanded until the 20th April. Bail was allowed as before. Mr. A. L. Herdman appeared for accused. A fui-thor remand until tho 19th inst. was granted in the cas>e of Wm. Jas. Geddys Hughes, charged with obtaining money from Elizabeth Blake and John Baptist Blake- by meaas of false pretences. Bail was allowed as before. Mr. H. E. O'Lcary repiesented accused. Thomas Page, a deserter from H.M.S. Cambrian, was remanded in custody, and ordered to be handed over to the Naval authorities on the first opportunity. Three charges of indecent assault were preferred against a young man named George Stewart Neigh. He was remanded until the 19th inbtant. Bail was fixed in the sum of £4X3, in two sureties of £20 each, or one of £40. Mr. V. Jensen presided over this morning's sitting of the Mount Cool: Police Court, when John Patrick M'Cann and Annie Ward weio each convicted and discharged for drunkenness.
