DEATH OF LORD PALMERSTON.
Lord Palmerston died on Wednesday morning, October 18, at Brocket-hall, at a quarter to 11 o'clock, and according to the statement of the medical attendants, he expired without suffering. Lady Palmerston was present at his death- Although he had not been in robust health for a considerable time past, Lord Palmerston was as well as usual until the middle of the i previous week when he took a drive and caught cold. His condition on Saturday, the 14th, excited some alarm, but on Tuesday, the 17th, he was apparently so much better that a very reassuring bulletin was issued. A change for the worse took place, however, in the evening, and it soon became evident that the illustrious statesman's end was near. He gradually sank, and died, as above stated, on the morning of the 18th. The regret which was so universally felt was increased by the comparative suddenness with which the painful intelligence came upon the public mind, it being by no means generally known until the 17th that there was any cause for apprehension. The news was at once conveyed by the telegraph to the leading provincial towns, and was everywhere received with the deepest feeling. The deceased viscount married, December 16, 1839, the Dowager Countess Cowper, daughter of the first Viscount Melbourne ; this union being without issue, the title expires with him.
