The Evening Post FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1865.
The Town Board Commissioners met yesterday afternoon, the following gentlemen being present :— Mr. Bishop, chairman ; Mr. Dran^fleld, treasurer ; and Mesgrs. Jacka, Quin, and Mills. On the motion of Mr. Mills' it was decided that the portion of the Terrace Koad between Kumutoto street and Kumutoto Bridge be metalled with as little delay an possible. ILyr&s resolved that a suitable drain be laid down as soon as practicable between Kumutoto Stream and the Reclaimed Land. The consideration of Mr. Jacka's motion, that it is desirable to h.ive a certain number of lamps for the use of L^mbton Quay, was deferred to next sitting daj^yjjtgj Dransfleld proposed that the Clerlf'be JHji •tructed to ask Mr. Borlase his opinion (pro fessionnlly) as to the position of the Town Board relative to the Market H.ill, and what he advlsei the Board to do in the matter."
1 A meeting of the Waste Lami Board is called for Tuesday next, by his Honor the Superintendent. Lieut. - Colonel Gorton, having returned v from Melbourne, will, we understand, resume the pommand of the Militia and Volunteers at Wanganui. Mr. E. W. Mills is making rapid progress with the repairs of the steamer Lady Bird, and in a very short time her services 'will be available. The Pahautanui Races are advertised to come off on Wednesday, 27th December. The ancient order of Foresters announce a soiree and ball at the Odd Fellow's Hall on Tuesday next, in aid of the* Land Reclamation Fund for the Foresters Hall. Miss Creed j Royal has offered her professional services on the occasion. The anniversary dinner of the Royal Rose of the Valley Lodge, Order of Oddfellows, takes place in the Hall on the first of January next, to be followed by a ball in the evening. The managing committee of the Oddfellows Hall have made arrangements for an excursion trip, by steamer, to Lowry Bay, on Boxing Day. The usual weekly meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade will take place on Monday , night next, at the Odd Fellows' Hall at eight ; oijlok. complaints frequently made of thoughtless persons plucking flowers from graves in the Church of England Cemetery, ! the practice is still continued, to the very great annoyance of surviving relations and friends. Two persons were brought before the Magistrate's Court yesterday, -charged with taking flowers from a grave, when Mr. George Moore, one of the trustees explained the steps taken to preserve the graves from ' desecration, and the determination of the trustees to punish offenders. His Worship warned the public generally that in future cases of the kind coming before him would be severely dealt witl^**/ 1 The first performance of Professor Stevens' troupe touk place yesterday evening, at which I there was a very good attendance. The feats ; of Master Stevens on the trapeze, and Pablo Fanqtie on the tight rope were worthy of this clever tronpe, and deservedly applauded, j The admirers of acrobatic performances will find unrivalled artistes in Professor Stevens and hi* clever sons. The solo on the cornet- I a-pistoii by Wilkins was well executed and 1 much admired. The feats are numerous, and rapidly succeed each other. To-night there will be a change of programme. To-night the Minstrels give a second of their delightful entertainments, and no lover j of sweet song should fail in attending the i Christy's levee this evening, when some of the most admirable airs will be sung by pro* i'essionals worthy of the name.
