MELBOURNE.
The Alhambra arrived, from Melbourne, at Dunedin on Monday last. Her news is to the 28th ult. Parliament was on the eve of being prorogued and a dissolution was imminent. The steamship Victoria had arrived from Otago, alter a very boisterous passage. A collision had occurred in Hobson's Bay, between the steamers Penda and City of Launceston, and the latter sank, crew and passengers escaping narrrowly. Mr M'Kerzie, who had been arrested on a charge of absconding from creditors, sued the Bank of Victoria aud was awarded £750 damages. An Amendment Act of the law for imprisonment for debt had come into opera-
tion, and the one debtor in Melbourne gaol was released, after four years and four ' months' incarceration. The New South Wales Government had resolved to communicate with the other colonies and the Home Government, as to the inefficiency of the F. and Company's mail service. , Collectors of Customs at Melbourne were being prosecuted by merchants for neglecting to collect dues on certain quantities of sugar and teas. Capt. Wellford of the A. J. Ramos, which had arrived at Melbourne repeats the report current of no vessels loading for Australia, and of the probability of the Chilian ports being blockaded by the Spanish. Adelaide flour has been taken rather more freely by the trade, at from £24 10s to £26 per ton, according to size of parcel and brand. Maize has been quitted in fair lots at 4s 8d per bushel.
