The Evening Post. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6,1865
Rumours are in circulation through town to-da* 7 that his Excellency Sir George Grey's resignation has been accepted by the authorities at Downing street, and that the fact has been made known to his Excellency in dispatches received by the mail yesterday. Although Sir George's resignation may have been accepted, and even his successor ap"Jmiflted, yet we believe we are correct in stating that up to the present moment no Official despatches whatever have reached Wellington by the late mail. They very "probably have been Bent to Auckland •• or elsewhere." <• We understand (says the Army and Navy Gazette) that General Cameron has resigned the New Zealand command, and it is very probable that he will arrive in this country by the next mail, or the next but one. By whom his place will be filled up, or whether it will be filled up at all, we cannot tell. If the troops are to be brought home, no general officer is needed In New Zealand. On General Cameron's departure, the command would devolve on Brigadier General Carey, under the ' superintendence of General Chute, at Melbourne. If we have to send out another general, we can only assure Mr. Weld and our Mew Zealand friends that we can find no v man with a higher reputation than General - Cameron possessed when he was selected to do battle for them. We sincerely hope that investigation will show that the shortcomings and confusion which have taken place are not attributable to him. i We would remind shareholders in the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company that the meeting for adopting or rejecting the resolutions proposed b\ the delegates from Hawke's Bay, will take plac. on Friday, 15th instant. Proxy papers must be deposited at the offices of the Company two days before such meeting, each proxy being in favour of a shareholder. Unless all arrears of calls be paid previous to the meeting, the votes will be useless. The s.s. Ahuriri,* we understand, sails this erening for Wanganui, and is chartered by the Government. The Choral Bocfety have very generously placed the Odd Fallow's Hall at the disposal of Mr. and Mrs. Case for to-morrow evening, and will hold their practice meeting at the Mechanic's Institute. Mr. and Mrs. Case's entertainment at the Odd Fellow's Hall thia evening will be honored by the presence of His Excellency Bir George Grey and suite. The piece for performance is entitled " Latest Intelligence from abroad and at home. " The usual weekly meeting of the City of Wellington Band of Hops was held yesterday evening in the Wesleyaft schoolroom. There were about 180 children and adults present. Mr Fniß_r nad ''A&iuryof London Lite," to Which all present listened attentively. The Secretary then delivered six ptizes to children for diligence in learning and reciting several pieces, after which Mr Strike addressed the meeting. The amount collected at the Penny Bank amounted to £6 hi conieque.ice ot the Mechanic's Institute
being engaged by the Choral Society for Thursday evening, the public meetiDg relative to the " Caledonian Games" is, postponed to Friday evening. An advertisement elsewhere in our columns announces the intended visit of Stevens' English troupe, Professor Stevens, Pablo Fanque and their company being shortly expected. _____________
