Up, We have much pleasure in informing the public that the question of carrying the mails between Wellington and Wanganui has at length been finally settled, and vjobb and Co. the «ut ceasttil contractors. Tenders were •ent in by by Mr. Davis, of Otaki, for the conveyance of the mails twice a week by packhorsc ; and by Captain Anderson, on behalf of Cobb and Co., for their transmission by coach, without limit as to weight. The difference between the tenders amounted to ptmut £60g^\Before deciding the matter, the PustmasteMieneral referred the question to the Provincial Executive, by whom it was considired, and deemed advisable to accept the tender of Mr. Anderson for the transmission of the mail by coacb. The service to be pa-formed will thus ensure a more regular 'iiul frequent delivery both of letter and newspaper mails ; and the extra advantage to the o.ulying districts will be secured at a vpry slight txtra cost, as the subsidy now pfill for the tra nsmisflion of the mail by « c m"t to Wanganui can be dispensed with. Ciiptii n Anderson was yeserday informed of the acceptaroa of his tender, and proceeded in the afternoon to Christchurch, to make arrangements for carrying into effect the immediate fulfilment of hia contract. This morning's Independent complains of its news ! ! 1 being misquoted by the New Zealand Herald, extracts from the Advertiser, " in which the writer talked some utter nonsense," being credited to the Independent. Ho far good ; but why should this bright particular Btar fling a stone at the Evening Post —how has it offended. We fear the dull times are telling on our contemporary's better understanding. " Sometimes, too," (says the luminary on the other side of the street) the opinions of the Evening Post — when it has any— are put forth to the public as ours." True, our opinions are seldom in flicted on the public, but, when in the vein, we do not indulge in Bneer". neither do we transfer to our columns, in absent mjod, from other journals without any acknowledgment — an offence for which the Independent lately received a rap on the knuckles from that, very Auckland paper, " whose peculiar style of sub-editing it cannot comprehend."
