IMPORTANT NEWS FROM POVERTY BAY. (From the Hawke's Bay Herrald, Nov. 14.)
The paddle steamer Sturt arrived on Saturday at 11 a.m., bringing news of the hostile and defiant conduct of the Hauhaus of that district, who had assembled to the number of 700, including, it was said, the miscreant Kereopa, — of the bulk of the Colonial Forces, and friendly natives under Morgan, having been transported from Waiapu by Mr. M'Lean's orders for Tauranga — of an ultimatum having been sent to the rebels on the evening o?Friday last, the rejection of the terms o%ered\n which would be the signal for immediate hostilities—and of the Sturt, with Mr. Cooper on board, having, in anticipation of the wor«t, been sent to Napier for a supply of arms and ammunition. The land at Waiapu belonging to the Hau-haus has been handed over to the Government as - territory forfeited by |ebellwn ; and the prisoners released upon condition of taking the oath of allegiance. Waiapu as been left with a garrison of 30 men under Lieut. Gascoigne; and when the Sturt left, upwards of 400 troops (European and native) were encamped at Tauranga, ready for orders to march upon the enemy's posts. ____________
