ARMY AND NAVY.
Seamen are very scarce, and wages have readied the fabulous ra'e of sixty shillings a month. Mr. Gladstone stated in the Honse that proposals had been sent to the Dunedin Naval Brigade to engage them for the regular navy, and the command of the Warrior iron clad is 10 be offered to Lieutenant Bncnford, late of that service. Owing to the depopulation of Ireland great anxiety i» felt as to how our future armies are to be raised. Lord Palmersion proposes to Kettle the belligerent Maoris in the Emerald Isle, and thus atone stroke settle an expensive and antipodean war, and supply superior material for home warfare in men who have proved themselves able to beat the British soldier.
