VRRIVAL OF THE AUCKLAND

4 The B.s. Auckland arrived from the South as we were going to press, bringing intelligence of the arrival of the English Mail at Adelaide. The Otago Daily Times of the 26th has the following paragraph : — " The s.s. Hero, which arrived at Lyttelton yesterday, lett. Melbourne on the 16th instant. As she was clearing the Heads, news was telegraphed i'roin Adelaide of the arrival there of the branch steamer from St. George's Sound, with the South Australian portion of the English July mails on board. It is probable that the F. and O. steamer, with the Australian and New Zealand mails, arrived in Hobson's Bay in the course ot the following day. As no steamer was at the time ready to sail for Port Chalmers, we shall' in all probability be kept at least another week without receipt of our English advices, which are already a week overdue. The intelligence from Melbourne is startling. The Judges have pronounced the action oi the Government in collecting duties under the new tariff, before its enactment by the Parliament, illegal, and the " question is to be carried by appeal to the Privy Council. Meanwhile, two Cabinet Ministers and the manager of the London Chartered Bank, are indicted for conspiracy with Sir Charles Darling, for an illegal dealing with the public money.
