ARRIVAL OF H.M.S. BRISK FROM OPOTIKI. ANOTHER ENGAGEMENT WITH THE HAU HAUS. THREE OF THE REBELS KILLED. CAPTAIN PERCY WOUNDED.
ILM.S. Brisk, Commander Hope, afrived in harbour at an early hour this morning, having left Opotiki on Saturday last. By this opportunity we learn that an engagement took place, on Friday last, between the Colonial forces, under Major Brassey, and the Ilau Haus, in which the latter sustained a defeat, leaving three of their number dead ; and it is supposed that a large number were wounded. The only casualty on our side was Captain Percy, wounded in* the thigh severely. Many of our readers wilt regret to learn this face, as Captain Percy, who was Sub-Inspector in the Defence Foroe in this ptovince until recently, is well known and much respected. • A native woman, representing herself as aunt to the late Mr. Fulloon, arrived at Opotiki from Whakatane, and upon going to the camp she stated that reinforcements should be sent to her district, as there were only eighteen friendly natives and thirty Hau Haus. She remained in the camp for two days, and was then permitted to leave. Before the Brink left Opotiki the stores and provisions were all landed, and Major Brassey intimated that he required no further assistance from the man-of-war. In noticing the intelligence to hand by this opportunity, we cannot but express a hope that the Government will see the necessity of giving some tangible acknowledgment of their appreciation of the great services rendered by Commander Hope and the officers and men under his command. Without the assistance of: the Brisk, it is more than probable that the expedition would not have been so entirely successful as it has proved so far.
