Ensign Henry Allan Clery to be Lieutenant. Ensign Jonathan Bear to be Lieutenant. John Norman to be Ensign. Dunedin Rifle Volunteers— Frederick Moss to be Captain. Vincent Pyke to be Captain. Duneiin Volunteer Naval Brigade — Wm. Thomson 111 1 be Lieutenant. John B. Roberteon to be Sub-Lieutenant.

His Excellency Sir George Grey has appointed Isaac Earl Featherston, Esq., to be a Commissioner to purchase land on behalf of the Crown within the boundaries of the Manawatu block. Yesterday's Gazette informs us that his Excellency the Governor has accepted the resignation by James Howorth, Esq, of his appointment of Crown Selicitor for Otago, and of the appointment thereto of the Hon. James Prendergast, M.L.C. Henry Cooper Daniel, Esq., has been appointed a Commissioner of Ciown Lands Frederick M. P. Brookfield, Esq., has been appointed Crown Solicitor for Auckland. The s.s. port this morning, at half-past six o'clock, from the South. Left Lyttelton at half-pust one yesterday, and experienced strong northerly breezes. In the House of Representatives, Mr. Mantell has given notice of the following motion for Tussday next : — " That it is expedient that this house should be put in possession of any further information which may have reached the Government relatire to an alleged assault by Brigadier General Waddy upon a Maori prisoner, Ihaia Tataraimaka; and that if no further information j has been received, it is right the Government should at once institute an enquiry into the subject." Mr. Graham has given notice that he will move on Wednesday, "That in the opinion of this house it would be conducive to the interests of the colony, and the success of the postal service by way of Panama, to make the ports of Auckland and Otago the ports of arrival a d departure to and from Panama respectively ; and that a respectful ad<3re-s be transmitted to his Excellency the Governor, requesting him to give effect; to the foregoing resolution in finally concluding any contract between the colony and any company who mivy undertake audi postal service." We are sorry to learn that on Wednesday last Mrs. Dudley Ward, who w.is riding out to the llutt, met with a severe fall from her horse near the Roadman's Hut, and hud to be conveyed back to town in a cart tiiat happened to puss at the time ; the injuries indicted were, however, not serious, though severe, and the much respected lady is in a fair way of reovery. ¦h&lr. Baird, the Government Engineer, went down in the diving dress yesterday from the Queen's Wharf, for the purpose of examining the piles ; he reunified about ten minutes under wtiter. The apparatus, we observe, is one of Mr, Keine's, of 103, Great Portland street, Lonrkm, an eminent marine enginegrJV The Standard says an accident occurred in tlu Lyttelton side of the tunnel through, it is supposed, spontaneous combustion. The whole face of the tunnel was speedily in flames, luckily, however, none of the men were at work. Considerable damage has been done, but to what extent it is impossible to say. Mr. Foley, of the Calif orr.ian Circus, we notice, has arrived from Waugnuni, and the tali nted troupe intend giving a series of performances. The troupe will arrive probably on or about Wednesday next. Mr Charles Smeale, an old settler in Tomahawk Valley, Anderson's Bay, expired suddenly on Wednesday last, while attending an election meeting which was being held there. Serous appoplexy is said to have been the cause of death.
