THE STEAMER NEW ZEALAND.
The Canterbury Evening Mali of the 15th instant says positive information has been received by the owners of this vessel that she has been wrecked, broken up, and sold for £60. Her cargo is partly lost and partly damaged. Yestei day's Press confirms the fact of the wreck, and states the vessel was lost on the north spit, has since been broken up, and was cold for £65. Only » small portion of her valuable cirgo has been recovered, and much of it considerably damaged. The Lyttelton Times ndt having reached us, we are uneble to add any further information to the above.
Some amusement was created on Friday, by a fracas that took place on board the Lady Frankliu, now lying on the south spit. It appears that a difficulty arose res- ' pecting some goods on board between the agent and consignee, which resulted in the delivery of the said goods being refused. The consignee, finding words of no avail, obtained the assistance of half-a-score members of the P.R., and boarded the vessel in the orthodox buccaneering fashion, took possession of the articles in dispute, and returned to Hokitika in triumph by a brilliant " flank movement" — the force on board the vessel being quite inadequate to the task of resisting the aggressors, and the police as usual beinj? too busy in making petty seizures of grog to care about maintaining the peace. — West Coast Times, Aug. 5. On Dit.— That the.- proprietors of the Daily Times have bought the copywrighfc of the Dunedin Saturday Review, and that Mr. J. S. Grant is engaged on the staff of the Daily Times, at his own^terms. That Sir George Grey and BishopTßelwyn have embraced the Pai Mairire faith, and have caught and cooked General Cameron. — Dunedin Punch.
