OTAGO.

Mr. Thomas Dick has been elected to the S uperintendeney of Otago.

We take the following paragraph from the Marlborough Press s— " No Irish Need Apply." The advertising columns of a Wellington paper contains an advertisement from a lady (?) for a nurse girl, which concludes with the grossly insulting words heading this notice. Who or what the lady may be we care not to know j still less for the gentleman who may have the felicity to call her wife, but we think the conductors of a journal at fault who permit such an advertisement to pollute their columns. When we want brave men to aid us in fighting our foes, do we say "No Irish need apply." When we asked tender and watchful nurses for Scutari and in our Indian earn* paigns, did we say "No Irish need apply." We must perforce believe that the lady who will not have an Irish girl to nurse her infant « will not have her table supplied with bread and meat by an Irish butcher and bakers and when it conies to her turn, as it is just within the bounds of probability, IF may, that she will lie on her final bed of sickness, she will doubtless refuse the skill of an Irish doctor, or the soothing care of a bed side attendant, who was born in the same highly objectionable part of the Home Country. We bad thought that in this free land where the same laws apply to all countries and creeds, that) such narrow sectarian differences of religion or clime, did not exist ; but we are. taught by a Wellington "lady" how greatelye^e ha,ve e rred.
