SUICIDE OF ADMIRAL FITZROY.
We have to record the death, by his own hands, of Vice Admiral Fitzroy, the chief of the meteorological department of the Government. The fatal act took place at his residence, Lyndhurst-house, Norwood, on Sunday morning, 30th April. On the above morning, about half-past 9 o'clock, he retired to his dressing-room for the purpose, as was supposed of getting ready for church. Being absent longer than was anticipated, some of the inmates went to his bedroom, and finding it locked it was forced open, and the unfortunate gentleman discovered with his throat cut, and a razor smeared with blood beside him. At the inquest a verdict of insanity was returned.
The attendance at Professor Bushell's on Saturday night was good, and the experiments in electricity treated in a lucid and popular manner, and passed off well. Then followed an amusing exposition of spirit rapping, very cleverly demonstrated, calling forth both astonishment and laughter. One of the most unaccountable effects produced was that of telling the time of evening by a number of watches, both minute and hour being faithfully rapped out. The entertainment terminated with experiments in electrobiology ; five young men brought under the influence were controlled by the operator in a most extraordinary manner. The professor's performance this evening will take place at the Odd Fellows' Hall.
