ENGAGEMENT BETWEBN MORGAN'S PEOPLE AND THE HAU HAU.
(prom the hawkb's bat herald, junb 24.) The arrivnl of the 5.9. St. Kilda on Thursday morning put us in possession of the important intelligence of an enagement having taken place on Sunday, the 11th instant, near Waiapn, between the Queen natives under Morgan and a large party of Hau Han fanatics. It appears that Patara — who was one of the party who accompanied Kereopa, the murderer of Mr. Volkner, although not actually present on the dreadful occasion — had taken up his quarters with the King natives at Waiapu, where they were entrenched in a strong pah. Morgan's people have for some time been determined, if possible, to take Patara prisoner; and, hearing on Saturday, the 10th instant, that he contemplated making his escape from the district, they made up their minds to attack the pah at once, which was done at daylight next (Sunday) morning. Though mustering no more than d 0 men, very indifferently armed, and with very little ammunition, they drove the Hau Haus out, pulled down the flag, and hoisted the English ensign. The Hau Haus had seven killed and six wounded. The latter took two prisoner?, three flags, and a number of muskets. It is to be regretted that Patara escaped during the engagement, but the friendly Ngatiporou are determined yet to apprehend him, and to repel the Hau Hau aggression . Before the St. Kilda lef L they had surrounded another pah at Pukemaire, and were only waiting the arrival of muskets and ammunition from Napier to attack it. They received these by the St. Kilda, and were in high spirits at the prospect of another engagement. Important news may be looked for by the next opportunity. The fact of these friendly natives having taken up arms to repress Hau Hau aggression, and having acted with so much promptitude and spirit, is one of considerable significance in the present condition of the Northern Island 5 and we trust that the men who have behaved so well will be fully supported and encouraged by the Government.
