SALE OF THE SOUTHLAND RAILWAY PLANT.

On Saturday, 27th May, was commenced the Bftle of the plant of the Southland Railway. Mr. Savers, the auctioneer, having arrived, accompanied by the Sheriff and some police, a crowd col'ected, and a small detachment of boys raised and kept up a hideous din by beating stones against Ihe iron building and empty tanks. The first lot put up was 1600 mils, and, before any bid was taken, Mr. Stuart stepped forward, and gave n )tice that the sale was illegal. The lot was then sold to Mr. Mackenzie, the only bidder, for £100. It is unnecessary to follow the auctioneer as he worked his way through the catalogue. Suffice it to say that splendid railway cars, almost new from the makers' hands, and valued at £400 or £"00 each, were knocked down to Mr. Mackenzie at £10 each } that the locomoMves (which were sold unseen, admittance being refused to the shed by those in charge) brought £10 for the three— £2o the large one, and £10 each the smaller ones, and that crab winches, worth at least £30 each, realised just as many shillings. The whole of the plant at Carnpbeltown, which could not be replaced under £20,000, brought £292. On the following Monday Che stock and plant at Mokonuko were sold. There were twelve luggage vans, five covered ditto, ninety-two boxes spikes, six pairs wheels and axles, and a lot of rails, chairs, elm keys, &c. At first there were no biddings, and Mr. Sayers declared them withdrawn, but under instructions again offered them. The entire bulls waa knocked down for an aggregate of £146, the principal buyer being Mr. Mackenjde.
