LEESTON— YESTERDAY

Frederick Riisden, who did not appear, was charged with using obscene language in High street^ Leeston, on Feruary 19" Albert E. Duffull, railway surfaceman, .gave evidence that he was working on the Courthouse section on Feruary 19. Two mci. were palling out on the road to a man in ( a car to «stop. The car driver pulled up and the men on the road said something to him, but witness did not hear what it was. The car driver then went oil again and one man used obscene language in a loud voice. He thought the two men were under the influence of liquor- Both were strangers to him. -
Constable Moriarty stated that he saw the two men in the street and heard one of them utter the obscene words mentioned by the previous witness. The man admitted using the language, but asked to be excused as they had had some drink. The men were members of a picnic party. Defendant was fined £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour:
John Carr, who did not appear, was charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order-
Constable Moriarty stated that on January 20 defendant was prohibited. Oh February 12 witness received. a complaint' and went to his house, where he was handed a bottle of beer by defendant's wife. He interviewed defendant, later at Doyleston railway station. Defendant denied that a man for whom he worked gave him the beer and said he had procured it before he was prohibited. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed, with the usual term of imprisonment in default.
