; . + _ ANNUAL SOCIAL. The concert and dance given by the Caledonian Society took place on Friday evening last m the Southbridge Town Hall, and was without doubt the most ■nccessfal m every way of the many which have taken place under the auspices of that popular Society. The HaU was literally packed, • from the fir_t '* skreigh " of the pipes, till the end of the last item, everything went off perfectly. As is always the case when "brither Scots" meet, there was plenty of enthusiasm, ani »nd«r the able management of the secretary, Mr IS. Cowan, not a hitch of any kind occurred. The programme opened with a March on the Scottish national instrument, played by Mr A McKay, who also gave another solo later m the evening. Miss Cooper sang My Mountain Lad, and also another Scottish song. Miss Gabbio received an encore for her renI dering of Here's a health, Bonnie Scotland to thee, and also for Eileen Alanna m the seeon'i part. Mr Brig enshaw and his cornet were absent, but his place was filled by Mr Blyfch who played selections of Scotch airs admirably. Mr Frame contributed an amuseing Sottish reading, and m the interval between the parts, Mr McLean Dunn j sang the Little Wee Window, and also gave a recitation. A quartette by the Misses Gabbie, Messrs Pilkington and B. West was capitally rendered, an 1 brought the musical portion of the programme to a close, Mr T. T. Woods created intense .amusement by hi. step dancing, giving a Nigger break down, a Sailor's Hornpipe and a Clog Dance ; an'l Mr Banks showed to advantage m tho Sword Dance, A foursome rj-ei byMessrs Donald McLean, A McKay, McLean Dnnn and an*_»thf.r Hi!?lan ; man completed the programme. At tho conclusion of the Concert, the Hall was cleared, and dancing was commenced, Tne floor at first was almost too crowded for thorough enjoyment, bat as the night wore oa there was rather more room. Almost seventy couples were present, and the Messrs Cooper provided excellent music. Interpersed with the more usual dancers were occasional Scotch reels and other terpsichorean frivolities which afforded great amusement not only to the performers but to the spectators. It was a late hour on Saturday morning before the last dance was concluded, and the Ellesmere ' Caledonian Society's Social was over for another twelve months.
