MONTHLY MEETING.
The ordinary meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held m the office, Leeston, on Wednesday afternoon, the following members being PRESENT. Messrs G. C. Waby (Chairman), W. Watson, P. J. Henley, and R. Loch, head. A letter of spology for non attend* ance wa9 received from Mr Jonea. koutihh. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirrae 1. BATE. Mr Lochhead moved—" That a General District Road Rate of one halfpenny m the pound be made and levied on all the rateable property within the Ellesxnere Road District for ths period commencing Ist April, 1891, and ending 31st March, 1892, sack rate to become due and payable m one sum on the 15th day of July, 1891." Mr Watson seconded the motion which was carried. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mrs Fay, Doyleaton, asking the Board to grant her some water pipes. Application refused. From Mr J. Oorbett, applying to have his name removed from the rate roll m respect of some land he occupied at Brookside — The application was made too late, From Mr Job Oaborne, complaining of a quantity of material which had been removed to bis side of the ro»d from the opposite side, and asking if he was expected to grub the gorse growing from it. — The letter was received. From several ratepayers at Dansandel asking for some shinning to be done on the Selwyn-Rakaia road. The clerk said that about sixty-fire chains of the road required shingling badlj.— lt was resolved to grant the request. From the Selwyn County Council asking for the Board's statement of receipts and expenditure.— The clerk xeported the returns asked for had been duly forwarded. From the Auditor General, covering the Board s balance-sheet, approved and certified as correct, — Received. PERSONAL INTERVIEWS. Messrs McLachlan, Fincham, and Scbnelle waited on the Board with reference to the question of right of drainage which was m dispute amongst them. A long and animated discussion ensued, but the Board could not see its way to interfere . Mr McLachlan aaked that Mr Fincuam be required to fill up a dram he had cut some years ago across a road leading to his (Mr McLachlan's^ land, and the Board had no option but to comply with the request, as the drain had been originally cut without its sanction. Mr Howson also attended, and laid before the Board a scheme for draining the land round Taumutu and Sedgmerct He asked the Board to have the levels of the Lake and the Taumutu lagoon taken. The clerk informed the Board that an exhaustive survey had been made, and full reports wore preserved m the Christchurch Lands Office. It was resolved to obtain * copy of the levels as ascertained by the Government surveyors for the information ol the Board and the ratepayers interested, The Board, however, thought Mi Howson's scheme was toocomprehensiu and costly. .They considered that th< parties affected should endeavour tc pome to gome understanding on tii<

The specification! for the opening up of Boggy Creel drain had been amended and the worl relet. Tenders had been called for th< remainder of the work. The re,; airs tc llushbl-ook's road) authorised at lasi meeting, had been satisfactory carried out. Two batches of poisoned grain had been distributed, farmers eagerly applying for it, and another lot will be readj by next Leeston sale day. FINANCIAL. Accounts amounting to £94 lGs 4d were passed for payment. TENDERS. The tender of James O'Boyle, for the remaining portion of Boggy Creek drain, running through Messrs Scott and Pearce's farm, at Is B^d a chain, was accepted. NOTICK OP MOTION. Mr Henley gave notice to move at next meeting that tenders be invited for for rhe maintenance of the roads for twelve months ; also that all work, including day work, be let by contract.
