It is very .hard ;to describe the ididnight san.; ;.*.., Mva^ ( jpvi write and jtell tiß exaqtly vrhat ii. does/ many of |our friends had. urged ,pn us, as if on |the stroke of twelve, o'clock they expefeted the sun to. spin rapidly round, or turn a Bomersauli, or Jpo. something eqqally queer. Well the sun does nothing jrery peculiar ; it is what it refrains from dbing •.*.' c. t that it does iiot set— that is ,; the extraordin ary part* : , Imagine yourself oh a .ship 'at «nchor ; lbpking !> ye^t or .j i: . m Jron^ pf^yqu ;' th^rpis a broad expanse of. sea a .little tf,> your right hand, behind you will be toe ragged coast, and to your left the- jlong '■' ! ' narrow fjord between the islands! and the mainland that the steamer has : just ; traversed. . You wattb! the sun as it aloofly, slpwly sets ; the island and- the, .■coasts, look, 'ike a, rich cjark, purples and the shadows? cast by the ship* masts, &<h, s grow longer and longer. 1 'After a hitywheu the' sun i has sunk apparently twelve feet' from the horizon, j it etops and seems to remain stationary" for about twenty ;minutes; then the very aeagulls bide away, while; the air all on a sudden striked chilly ;. each , one has an awed, expectant feeling,, and surrbtinaing^retf the tcfurist steamer broods '"■'' a silfeiice' that may be MX- Soon the ■^inn rises y^ry biice agfain. and sthe yellow cbuds change with his upTifling to even greater beauty, first to iiKe palest' primrose^ and then to a folnish pink. The sky, which was just iiott arose colour, becomes grey,: then pale emerald green, and lastly blue ; rock after rock stands out, caught by the sun's bright rays, and "tha reign of days has begun once more.
