The alarm was quickly given, and the brigade was .promptly; on board, and tried for, ; sorne time to extinguish tlie flamee, but the clooda of the dense smoke showed tl&ttue seat of tiie fire had not been reached. It became apparent that the diiibf eak had started m the lower hold . Owing to the suffocating sinokj it was at first impoßßiblH to get a lead down to this lower levfir ihßf fdrohatch, and unfortunately any access by way of the m-.iin boit was blocked by a tier of closely packed flux on the 'tween decks, which it wuul.l take a long time to break through. The firemen had a tryiug task to keep theileadsdirv'ctly down the hatchway, and [tho heat and smoke were too great to enable anyone to see if the- hatcli • ways on the 'tween decks were opened or i not « ' ■ ' ' '••--■
