MINING NEWS.

The following is the weekly‘report of the manager of White’s Reef Co., ending 4th December Mine 1 have driven west from the rise about 16ft. ' The reef is from about 18in to 2ft thick, and carrying payable gold.- My reasons for driving to the west was to prove ,if this was the same shoot of stone as towards the east. I found it so. Shall continue to drive another week, and thoroughly test same. 1 also intend to carry on the east drive so as tc enable me to keep the battery going day and night. 1 washed up. and the returns is 48os lOdwt, amounting to Llßl 17s 6d. Of course, as you are aware, this is only the old stuff from last season. I may mention that Boa odd was got by sluicing. On Friday f commenced crushing the new stone, and in my next report 1 will be in a position to give you an idea as to how it will turn out. It was my intention to put or three shifts during tli a week, but I could not get men to my liking and who understood the won, so therefore I had to do with two shifts, but if possible I will endeavor to get suitable workmen to carry out the work as 1 intended, A good deal of gold is now being got in the Bhicks portion of the district from the Matakanui side, especially where all the tig sluicing claims are washing up for the year. With the exception of the Undaunted Company, who obtained some 2300-)*, nothing positive is known, but it is understood that all the claims are turning out well. From private sources we learn that White’s Reel is looking remarkably well, and that indications tally warrant the new manager, Mr Bennett, be'ng so sanguine of turning out a good cake before the Christ, mas holidays. The late crushing was the cleaning up o' all the refuse quarts and easing that was lying about the claim and got from all parts of the claim.
