Thu should afford local metallioians plenty scope to lay trebles, doubles, or anything else that is likely to prove re • munerative, in fact, it is quite a common sight to see knots of men together busily pencilling their wagers. Who will now say that,we are not a sporting community ? Nine entries for the Alexandra Handicap, eight for the District, and seventeen for Trot, will surely please the most fastidious. The itev. Mr J. G. W. Ellis, Bible Christian Minister, holds Divine Serv ce on Sunday morning next, 12th inst., at 11 a.m., in the Town Hall, Clyde. This being the rev. gentleman’s first appearance in this part of the district, we trust he will be met by a large assemblage.
At the regular meeting of the Alexandra School Committee, held on Monday last, it was agreed that the secretary should ask the assistance of the Education Board for the erection of a small addition to the schoolmaster’s residence, which is required. The Dunstan Presbytery meets at Ophir on Wednesday, the 15th September.
The Borough Council of Alexandra are making several improvements in the streets, and also in tree planting round the township an 1 at the cemetery, which has now been laid out and planted with ornamental trees. This latter woik was much needed, and ha« greatly improved the appearance of the cemetery grounds and the approach to the same.
A concert in aid of the Alexandra Biass Banu is to take place on the Ist October, >he night o'the Alexandra Banes. A concert takes place at Bald Hill Flat ou F.idpy, the 17th inst. The proceeds are in aid of the school funds.
The Molyneux has iNen several feet daring the last day or so, having been previously very low. Mr \V. Green, we learn, has at last got to work on his reef claim, having completed his wafer race. He is at present inconvenienced for the want of steady supply of water, but anticipates to get over that difficulty by the erection of a large dam wherein to store the night water. Mr Green has displayed since he made the discovery a great amount of energy which we hope will be rewarded by some handsome finds.
The closing night ofthe Alexandra Quad-* rille Assembly is notified for Wednesday next, the 15’.h inst. This afiiair has been successfully carried on during the winter months, and it is to be hoped that the winding up night will be well attended, Mr Patrick Morecsey offer? a further reward of L 25, making the reward note LSO, for information of Edmnn I Moressey, who mysteriously disappeared from his home on Blacks Flat in May last.
We have been shown a memorial to the Hon. the Minister of Lands praying that runs No. 2’3, 223 a, the leases of which fall due in March 1888, be cut up and surveyed into sections of from 320 to 640 acres, and offered for sale.
The contractors of the new Post and Telegraph Office at Ophie, wo notice are pushing ahead with the work and making good headway. The usual month'y meeting of the Clyde Library Committre was held on Tuesday evening last, Messrs Dr Lewis (in the chair), Dickie, Holden, J. 13. Stevens (Treasurer), and (1. Fache, in attendance. Beyond the passing of a few accounts theie was no business of particular iuteiest transacted. Mention, however, was made of library books being in tire possession of other than subscribers, and it was decided to make an example of the first one discovered being guilty. Mr Mortis, teacher of the public school at Coal C p eek, Teviot. has been appointed to the Ophir .School,
It will be remembered that some months since a tire spread Horn Mr d. M‘Arthur's farm on to Moutere run, burning in its course the grass of about 2000 acres, also some fencing and about 20 lambs. A few weeks back the question of damages sns-t-'ined by Mr Lubecki, the runholder, was gone into by Messrs R. -Stewart and A. A. Oliver, assessors. They, however, failed in coming to any agreement, and it was then referred to Mr Win- Fiasfer as umpire. That gentleman has given his decision, fixing the damage at some L 123, which has to be paid by Mr M‘Arthur. The loss is a heavy one for Mr M‘Arthur in these times of low prices and dull markets, and he has our deepest sympathies.
An offer bus been made to the New South Wales Government to exterminate the rabbits in the colony at a cost of L 5 a day, the result to be demonstrated in nine months; but a condition is impose ! that the inventor of the process shall have the exclusive right to its use after the trial has been completed. The Government cannot give such a guarantee, but propose to introduce a bill securing to any person making known a process for the extermination of rabbits the exclusive benefit of it without patent rights. The body of William Mathe.on, a member of the Armed Constabulary at Wellington was found in the Wellington Harbor, near the breastwork at Waterloo Quay, yesterday momma. It is not known how ho got into the water, but ho had been d inking on Saturday. Deceased was well known in Dunedin and tl;e country districts. Some years ago he was a prominent figure at the ' gatherings of the Caledonian Society, and for several years was champion hammer thrower. He was living at Melbourne when the Soudan Contingent was formed at Sydney, and at once voluutercd. He took part in that camuai-n, and about a fortnight ago receive 1 the l.npeiial melal for service in the Soudan. He was a little over thiity years of age and was married. The ‘ Mataura Ensign ’ states that the late snow has completely destroyed all the rabbits on the high couutiy about W.dkauv. If such a blessed consummation could be secured tor file unfortunate Lake s ' district, we are sure that the residents geoeially would willingly forego continuance of the present lovely weather for a foitnis'ht of severe frost and snow.
