In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Clyde, ou Tuesday last, another phase of the caso of Holt v. Marie notoriety was gone into, The offence this time was for assumed damage done to Holt’s workings through Marie running water in an open race over Holt’s lease. The Magistrate reserved his decision until he could visit the ground.
In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Clyde, on Tuesday last, a number of cases ci cattle trespass within the town of Clyde were heard, and in each case a fine of two shillings and sixpence and seven •'hillings costs of court was inflicted. The Magistrate remarked that the offending animals would soon becoms very dear if their owners allowed them to roam at large much longer. At the eame time there were several cases .under the wqigb.ta_ami .measures Act for having light weights. Ila two instances against Chinese storekeepers, one resident at Cromwell, the other at Nevis, separate charges were laid for each faulty weight. Mr S’. ,1. V;bison, who appeared for the defendants in each case, pleaded guilty to one oflenco, but contended that it was uever contcmpiated that offences under the Act should .bo cumulative, and said that a conviction for one offence having been obtained, the other cases must bo withdrawn. 'I he Magistrate upheld the contention, and remarked that in future one summons Jwouid be sufficient to issue against one person for offences discovered in one day. aro-kfortned that the Forrester’s Ball at Alexandra on Monday last, (he 24th inst., was a great success, but owing to the usual complimentary ticket not coming forward, we refrain from making any further comments thereon.
Mr Robert Fergusson, carrier, passed through Clyde on Tuesday last with his two waggons loaded with rabbit skins from the Kawarau and Northhurn stations. Wo aro informed by Mr Fergusson that the number of skins was -100,000, being tbo largest lot ever taken off any np conntry station. 1

The sentence passed by Judge Gerry on a wretch named Alfred Packer, who was associated with a band of explorers seeking for gold on a spur of the Rooky Mountains in Hiusda’e County, Colorado, in the month of February 1874, am) who murdered the whole party, alleging in extenuation of his crime, on his arrest ten years later, that he was impelled by the cravings of hunger to devour their bodies, is thus narrated by the local paper.and Gunnison. Tho I'iustrated London News is our authority for the expressions of the judge, who is repotted to have said:— “ Stand up, yer cannibal! Yer a nice sort of patriotic citizen ain’t ye 1 Here, right at a time when there ware only eight men in the county, you must go to work ond eat up-five of them.- It’s a great pity the law can’t do more to you than hang you. which it will on ench and such a day. Sit down, you —monopoly cannibal! ” Unfortunately for the country, the culprit is not hung as yet, and the citizens are lamenting tint they were prevented from carrying Oat their patriotic intentions of lynching him immediately after trial and so saving the costa of an appeal to tho State, and afterwards to the Supreme Court, which, with the expense of feeding the criminal, who passes his time “in making fanciful chairs and picture frames from cigar box wood,” will amount to at least 5000 dollars.
