No local business at Land Board yesterday. A steamer and a barque are both advertised to leave here for Kimberley diggings should sufficient inducement offer.
At Auckland yesterday a meeting shareholders of New Zealand Smelting Company resolved to wind up Company. The last crashing from Tipperary Mine produced 286 ounces gold’from 193 tons stone.
At Gisborne yesterday William Hawland was commited for trial on charge of murder.
There are forty-three entries for Dunedin Champagne Stake* of 1887. Jack won Autumn Handicap at Geraldine to day, Patrician second. I’hs inquiry into Dowling Street accident continued to-day and is not concluded. Ihe Estimates wero circulated in Wellington yesterday they do not differ much from last year. It is understood that the committee appointed to wait on the Minister of Public Works in connection with the Otago Gentral Railway have been informed by the Minister that no further information than that contained in the Financial Slaremeat can be afforded on the subject. It is rumoured to-night that Major Atkinson bomg dissatisfied with the Financial proposals of the Government will bring down a no-confidence motion, in which, will be embodied the necessity for further retrenchment in the Public Service

London, May 2G Ormonde, the Bard, ami St Minn, were first three in English Derby. Owing to continued had weather the cricket match between Australians and Marylebone Club has been abandoned. The Oxford eleven will banquet the team when their match is played. His Imperial Majesty the Czar who is on a visit to this city was waited upon to-day by the Mayor who presented the usual offering of bread andsall accompanied by a loyal address. The address stated that the restoration of the Black Sea Fleet tended to strengthen the beluf that the Crons would shortly shine above the dome -of the Mosque of Saint Sophia at Constantinople ; the Czar in reply avoided any allusion to the subject.
