We have to appologisa to our readers for the non-appearance of onr usual supplement with this morning’s issue. As the Governor was proceeding down the wharf at Onehnnga one night thin week, to embark by the Hinemoa, he stumbled and fell into the water. Mr Noble, |chief officer of the Hawea, jumped in to the rescue of His Excellency, but Sir William was able to catch hold of a wharf stringer, and was at once hauled on with a rope. His Excellency was none the worse for his ducking. Mr Cooper, Under Secretary, who held an inquiry at Palmerston in connection with the Babbit Act,, in his report entirely ex* onerates the Babbit Inspector, Mr Miles, and Ihe agents under him from any blame or neglect of duty. He even goes farther and gives them credit for having done their beat to administer the Act and to “ all holders of property up to their work.’ This must be highly satisfactory to the 0 officers and a very gratifying tribute to the effectiua discharge of their difficult and onerous duties.
Mr Ayson, lately manager on Montere Station, has been appointed an agent under Mr Shaw, the Babbit Inspector, in the place of Mr Hargraves, who has been pro* moted to an inspectorship and transferred to Auckland.
On Monday last, a very old and decrepid man named William Adams aged 75 years, and who baa been residing in the Blacks district for a number of years past, was brought into Clyde and left without a word of explanation at the gates of the Dunstan District Hospital. After a time the presence of the old man being noticed, ha was interrogated by the Wardsman, when it was learnt that he was entirely without means, and, moreover, was too feeble to work, and that he h*d been sent from Blacks with the view of being admitted in to the hospital. He'was at once admitted, and his case brought under the notice of (he Trustees, who now feel themselves in a false position, as from the report of the Eesident Surgeon, the case is not one for a hospital, as the poor fellow, though old and beyond work, is perfectly hale and healthy, bat is unquestionably a fitting case for the Benevolent Institution, into which an effort will bs made to get him admitted. A service of Sacred Song with connective Sciipture Readings will be given in the Presbyterian Church, Alexandra, on Sunday evening, 9th inst., at 7 p.m. The usual meeting of the Charitable Aid District Board was held in the Vincent County Offices on Thursday] the 6th inst, at which were present: W. "We understand that the battery at White’s Keef is again at work, and that the tables ar9 looking remarkably well. We hope such is the case, as something is needed to cheer up the hearts of the shareholders. Shares at {the present are at a discount, should the next cleaning coma up to expectations!;! different fa-e would be put upon matters. A great deal has been
said from time to time as to the bad
management, and it has been suggested that a radical change should be made in the management—m the first place by the directorate being removed from Dunedin on to the neighbourhood of the mine. A local directory coold not put gold into the stone, but their supervision would be more, direct, and in the interests of shareholders*also of the district we should hope to see the Bug-* gestion acted upon. The Alexandra Library Committee have recently added about 150 new volumes of poetry, travels, and fiction to the Library. The books were got direct from Home, are strongly bound, and comprise some of the most recent publications. Mr Facbe requests us to draw attention to the sale by auction at Blacks Fiat on Monday next. The Colorado Beetles, who are announced to appear in the Town Hall, Clyde, on Saturday evening (to morrow), according to the Pass, are well deserving a visit. A novel feature in (he company is that there are six females in it, all of whom in their respective parts are good, while some are spoken of as being perfect beauties. A pretty woman or girl should bo sufficient to attract a full house.
