Dpskdin, May 6, 7.50 p.m. No local business was transacted at Land Board yesterday. Captain Webster, Master Agnes, and Titbit were first three in Timaru Cup yesterday. It is proposed to dispatch a steamer from Auckland to take miners to Kimberley diggings The inq nry into grounding of the Taupo ended yesterday, and resulted in all of the officers certificates being returned.
No declaration of insolvency has been filed fn Dunedin for over three weeks.
Among a new batch of J.P.’s which have just been appointed, are Messre John Aspinall, of Lake County; David Howell, of Mount Pisa; and J, B. Wingfield, of Alexandra. 'The Minister for Mines left for Wellington yesterday. London, May 4.
The Indian arid Colonial Exhibition was opened to day by the Queen. The ceremony was most snccesslul and an enormous concourse of people were present. Telegrams of congratulation were exchanged between Queen and Prince of Wales and the various Colonial Governments. The ode by the Port Laureate is also published The labor riots in Chicago have now assumed a very serious phase. A meeting of Socialists, numbering fully 15,000 men, was held yesterday in that city. The police authorities ordered the crowd to disperse, but the Socialists offered a stubborn resistance, throwing explosive bombs among the police, killing five and wounding many others. The police then fired upon the riot°rs, fifty of whom were shot dead, and a large number wounded The greatest consternation prevails in the city, business being to a large extent at a standstill.
The European Powers will present a fresh Note to Greece to*day, on the subject of disarming. INelson, the New South Wales oarsman, will probably teceive the Royal Humane Society’s medal for courage* ously saving a boy from drowning.
Prince Alexandra, of Eoumelia, wi l pay a visit to the Sultan of Turkey shortly. The question .of Home Rule for Ireland is now under discussion in the Canadian Parliament. Advices from the Frontier states that the Mahidist Arabs are massing in large numbers in the vicinity of Dongola. A force of Sikh police, consisting of 2000 men have started for Mandalay. In spite of the vigilance of the Bid tish troops, another immense fire has occurred in that city.
Mr Gladstone informed the House of Commons to«day that the time, allowed by the Powers tor an answer from Greece to their ultimatum re garding disarmment had expired, and no definite reply had been received. Mr Gladstone added that the previous reply was inadequate and unsatisfactory.
