The very large number of swaggers that are travelling about thecountry is almost beyond belief- The rabbit poisoning industry that is now getting pretty general throughout the country will doubtless employ a great many, but we doubt if it will be able to take up all who are looking for work. If the weather we have had during the past few days is a fair sample of what we may expect as the season advances, we may expect a very severe winter, and we almost dread to think of the sufferings - those that tail in finding employment will have to endure. The Government and the larger local governing bodies on the seaboard are nobly and generously stepping in and helping the poor unfortunates to stem the adverse tide of depression that has set in. All their efforts, however, as yet have been of little or no effect, The evil of the present mode of proce» dure arises from the fact that the relief works are chiefly on the seaboard, thus drawing from the interior all those who want and are willing to woTKt 'To ouv mine! the true system would be to find work in the inteiior, and that duty devolves upon the Counties and other local bodies. We know full well that we are venturing npon dangerous ground, but we see no reason why up conntry should not share equally with down-country in allaying the present cry of want. The question is worthy the consideration of our local governors. The aim and desire should be to keep the people up country when we have got them, but it appears the aim is to drive them away.
