At the Thames a terrible fatality occured about ’ 3 b’clock yesterday afternoon, by which twominers, named Thomas Casley arid' Hugh .Dill, employed in the Caledonian Company’s mine, lost their lives. It appears that while working at the lowest level of the mine the gas rose suddenly, and they, were overpowered by it before they. were able to escape,. An information has been laid against the manager of a Fire and Life Insurance Company in Wellington for embezzlement of a large sum of money. The authorities are very reticent, and refuse to disclose the name of accused. The amount is said, to be LI2OO.
At Land Board to-day, Mr Brown’s motions re advertising were agreed to after the, first had been amended to provide that ail unsold lands previously offered for sale shall be advertised once ia six months in the newspapers of such districts wherein such lands are situate.
