OBITUARY
It is onr painful duty this week to record the death of Mr Henry John Cope, a gen--1« man who will be remembered by most of the old identity m this and the Lake Di»trict flora the many prominent positions he held. Fiom information we have received, Mr Cope succumbed m August last to an attack of diphtheria and asthma, whilst an inmate of the Brisbane Hospital, after but two short days’ illness. Mr Cope was amongst the first arrivals in Otago from Australia on the breaking out of the gold
field- —■ J —-a— —waif' engaged by Sir Julius Vogel (then plain Mr) as Special Goldfields Correspondent for the “ Daily Times.” From Tuapeka be joined the rush to the Dunstau still in the same capacity, and to his versatile pen is no doubt doe the ereat rush that followed. Afier a time he joined in the proprietary of this journal (Dunstan Times.) At a later date he was farming in the Arrow district. After that be was connected, indee I, it may be (aid be pioneered the Maoetown Reef*. He then removed to Tasmania, and made himself conspicuous amongst the Mount Bischoff tin miners’. From there he made bis way to Sy ney, and rumour then hail it that he went Home ; at any rate he made Queensland, and as our information gives us to understand, he terminate I his eanbly career in the casual ward of the Brisbane Hospital. Wit hall, he was an industrious and energetic man, and a good staunch friend where he took to. With bis undoubted ability, apd the many opportunities he had, his career might have been different to what it was. However, with all his faults (and who are spotless), he was a good man, and we feel assured has left many behind, who with us, will join in heartfelt regrets that poor (Old Cope), as he was universally styled, should have passed away in a s range pace, and without one fri ndly hand to close his eyes. fn a future issue we hope to give a more de‘ ailed account of the life and doings of M r Cope.
