MR CLAPCOTT ON LIFE INSURANCE.

ii -'fjlr Chpoitt, District Agent for the Government Insurance, delivered a lecture at Alexandra on Monday evening last, and at Clyde on Tuesday. On the former occa* sion the weather was most Unpropitious, but notwithstanding this there was a good audience, though not nearly so large as that which attended at Clyde on Tuesday. Mr Clapcott must have been pleased at the compliment paid him by the Clyde residents who accepted bis invitation, many ladies being present. Mr Clapcott, after giving the origin of, the Government scheme, mentioned its special features, dwelling on, as of the utmost import-< ance, the perfect security, inasmuch as by the Act of 1872 the consolidated income of the whole country is pledged to the payment of all Government policies. The premiums were shown td be far lower than those of private companies, so much so that what wonld only buy LIOlX) with a private company, would purchase nearly LI2OO with the Government. By explaining that at a cost of about' three halfpence a day any person of average age can secure a policy forj LIOO, the lecturer pointed out that no family should be left unprovided for, and that what held good as regards LIOO, was in proportion equally true with respect to any larger amount. Mr Clapcott, by racy and amusing anecdotes, demonstrated the absurdity of the excuses made by peis ms for not insuring, and passing on he explained the necessity of will making, and the consequences that folow the death of one who dies intestate. Whilst on this pint Mr Clapcott mentioned the Public Trustee’s departmen b, and called a'tention to the advantages offered by it to persons who elected to appoint that officer as executor under their wills rather than private friends, inasmuch as whilst the latter might bqfame incapacitated, the former oould never become so, and whilst the charges made by the Public Trustee being regulated by Act are very moderate, the State guaranteed the fidelity of the officer and the faithful execution of trusts reposed in him. lieverting to insurance, JMr Clapcott by logic, sarcasm, and pathos, appealed to his audience to at once perform * ‘ the wisest and moat unselfish act of making j provision for themselves in taeir advanced years, or for f heir families in case of death. The attention paid to Mr Clapcott’s remarks by so large an audience must have been most pleasing to that gentleman, who after the lecture* gave two readings—one by hliba Barrett, the other a selection from “ The School for Scandal.” These brought the evening to a close, and apparently all present were not only interested, instructed, hut thoroughly entertained* Mr Clapcott proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Wilson for having presided, and introduced Mr Newman to the audia oe, who is now canvassing this district on behalf of the Government Insurance. By advertisement in anothei column Mr Clapcott intimates his intention of lee- 1 taring at Blacks on Monday, June Ist; at Tinkers on Tuesday, the 2nd ; and Bannockburn on the 4th.
