The following figures, taken frotn returni laid before the last aeaaion of Parliament, must prove of general interest; - Total value of exports from New Zealand from the opening of the Otago goldfields 1861 to 1883— L 109,642,188 ; of this large sum, gold contribute! L 40.003.767 ; ,wool, L 50,632,898 ; gram, L 7,264,014; toe balance miscellaneous. The amount paid by Government towards the maintenance of hospitals and charitable aid for the year 1883 84 was L 85.242 19s lOd, of which Otago and Southland received L 10.912 15s 6d. The amount expended on the roads, tracks, and bridge was L 331.373 Us Bd—Vincent count* receiving L 2045 9s 8d ; Maniototo coriSfi 1 L 2265 10s, 2d; Tuapeka, L 6499 Us 9d; Lake county, L 9281 6s Id.
