The publicans returned majority, of candidates for licensing Committee at Wellington yesterday. About 800 persons went by excursion to day to Lawrence. At Education Board to-day the following appointments were made ; —J. Beattie, head teacher, Cambrians; A. Chalmers, schoolmistress, Bannock* burn. ,
An accident, attended with fatal results, occurred at Broad Bay this morning
John Martin, aged 68, was driving a horse drawing firewood from the bush when the animal kicked him in the face, killing him almost instantly. On Saturday morning there was an outbreak of septicoemia or blood poisoning in two surgical wards of the hospital at Wellington. The disease was traced to a case of puerperal fever, from which a patient died in 24 hours Every precaution was taken to prevent the spread of the disease, but it increased, and last night Dr Chelton, the medical officer, was compelled to discharge all such cases to their own homes and to close the surgical ward. Infectious cases have been strictly isolated, shut it is feared that these patients are in very grave danger. Edward Carter, a horse dealer, was killed in Cnnmer Square, Christ* church, this afternoon. He was out riding when his horse bolted with him and unseated him. The horse jumped ■a, fence with Carter clinging to his neck and fell. Carter was picked up insensible and died shortly afterwards. London, February 18.
The Times to-day states that the Opposition leaders have decided on the meeting of Parliament to propose a vote of want of confidence in the ■Government on ’heir Egyptian policy. It has transpired that the Government have decided to decline the offer ot the Canadian aiid 'Victorian troops for the Soudan, as it is believed they ■could not arrive at the scene of •operations in time to be of service. The latest telegrams from Korti announce that Major-general Sir Evelyn Wood has gone to Gubut on the Nile above Metemneh, and Colonel Blacken'ol7 has consequently succeeded to the command of the late General Earl's column. Mr James Eyson, the well known squatter, has subscribed £2OOO to the patriotic fund. The steamers Iberia and A ustralia have been chartered to convey the troops to the Soudan, and are getting in readiness. Lord Wolseley has wired to Lord Luftns expressing his pride and pleasure at having Colonial soldiers under his command. The troops at Korti are delighted at the prospect of having Colonial comrades with them. The Government will ask for a further vote of two millions for the Soudan expedition. Major General Sir Herbert Stewart, who was severely wounded near El Metemneh, is dying,
The Queensland Government have offered to send volunteers to join the Australian Brigade which is being forwarded to the Soudan. It is considered that their offer is certain to be accepted.
