The other day, says the Akaroa'Mail, Mr H. Piper and a friend ware on horseback in Bayley’a hotel, when a collie dog, to Mr Piper, ran into the house and made his way upstairs When he reached the upper floor he must have heard hia master’s voice, for instead of returning ha came out on the balcony, and, in spite of all endeavours to send him back, mounted the iron balustrade in a perfectly cool and matter-of-fact manner, and took a leap of some 20ft. on to the hard stones below. What is stranger still, the jump did not seem to affect him in the least, for immediately on reaching mother earth he began investigating the neighbouring fences and tenements after the manner of dogs.
If fortunes are made with great rapidity in the United States, they aie lost there with equal rapidity. Mr R. M. Bishop is now ven ding cigars among tho tobacconists of Lexington. A few years aco he was Governor of the Stale of Ohio, and President of the Kentucky University. ■ ■
