PROFESSOR BLACK AT ALEXANDRA.
Professor Black delivered a course of three lectures ait Alexandra bn the 9th, 10th, ami 11th inst., which were very successful. - There were very good attendances, and tho earnest attention bestowed on the lectures and experiments showed that the audiences were fully alive to the advantages to be derived from the teachings of the Professor. The subject of the first lecture was. on “ The Formation of Quartz Veins ” ; the second was on “The Deposition of Gold in the Veins ” ; and the third was ou “ The Method of Testing Ores, in order to determine the metals they oontrined,”
The lecture* were illustrated by numerous experiments, which, together with thg clear logical style of the lecturer, enalfcU him to make what would been rather a dry subj ct fora general audience, in the highest degree both instructive and interesting.
At the conclusion of the lectures, Professor Bla;k expressed his intenti m of making another tour through the goldfields next year, when he would be able to afford time to form testing classes in all the mining centres, so that the miners would themselves be enabled to teat and determine the value of any ore they mivht discover. The Professor expressed himself as being highly gratified by the success which had attended his lectures throughout the goldfields, and said some people had told him before ha commenced his tour that the miners would not take the slightest interest in his lectures, hut he had received a convincing proof to the contrary.
At the conclusion of the last lecture the Mayor proposed s vote of thanks to Professor Black for the able and instructive lectures he had delivered, which was carried ‘by acoliidatio'n.
