CONCERT AT ALEXANDRA,

A concert and dance in aid of the funds of the Uunstan District Hospitd took place mthe Town Hall, Alexandra, on Fnd.v last. There was a very fair attendance, bub the unusual quantity of sickness which baa been prevalent in the district of late doubtless prevented the hall from being -o packed as might have been expected, considering the object for which the concert was given Regarding the concert itself, it is not too’ much to say that lovers of good music re. C w Vo i i a* at ™ hich haa seldom been afforded in the district. The proceedings commenced wi.h an overture by the A'ex andra Band played in their usual exce.lenb style. Mr Austin then gave •• The Village blacksmith, m a manner which shrWe-l he had lost none of his old power. Mia* ford then sang “ Bet er Bide Awee, 1 ' and was warmly applauded. The next item a pianoforte duet by Mesdames Wingfield and Lothian, was played in a most brilliant manner, and elicited a perfect burst of applause. A song by Mr P. Williams sueceeded which was excellently rendered, this gentleman has apparently given ud the comic for the sentimental lino of singi g and judging from the manner in which He rendered his songs on this occasion, he pro. imaes to become as popular in his new role as in the oi l one. Mias Thompson who was down on the programme for the next sons being unfortunately too ill to sing her place was taken by Miss Bowden, who sang in a very pleasing s'yle, A duet "The Gipsy Countess.” by Mr Austin and Miss Telford was very well given ; as was also 'vf "KiHarney,” by Miss Colgan. Miss E. Thomson sang “ Mill May,” in a stvie that gives promise that this young lady will be an acquisition to our local concerts. The first part of the programme c.mnluder. with a duet from !! Norma” on the clarionet. and cornet by Messrs Bell and Pagefc. This was one of the gems of th* evening, and elicited an enthusiastic m response to which the performers ‘Alt’s well’’in firstclass style. short interval the second part of tt e 'hj.'* gramme was commenced ; it would take too much space to go through the entire' programme, but mention must be made of a pianoforte duet by Mrs Lewis and Miss Colgan which was very well rendered, also a duet (clarionet and concertina) by Messrs Hogan and Bell, and a song by Mr Macgeorge, who kindly assisted In the unavoidable absence of Mr Miles ; allot which wire warmly applauded by the audience, which appeared to thoroughly enjoy the excellence of the entertainment. At the conclusion of the concert, on the motion of Mr Finlay % vote of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who had given their services was carried by acclamation, and after a simi ar vote to the Mayor (G. N. McDonald, Esq), for presiding on the occasion, the hall was cleared for dancing, which w»s kept up with spirit until daybreak. The gross proceeds of the concert will bo between Ll6 and Ll6.
