■ telegram has been received in Wellington from Roxburgh by Captain Edwin of the Meteorological Department s “ Between 4 and 5 p.m. yesterday a heavy tnuniier cioud bruat \>ver this township and i s vicinity with a circuit of about four miles causing the creeks to flood to such an extent as to carry away the town waterworks liesde tearing up the supply pipes and opening culverts of 20 years’ standing. The damage is estimated to be at least L4OO to L 500.”
About midnight on Monday a shanty keeper at Henthorne, named William M eldrum, was assaulted by three men named Lawrence Whit i, Thomas Crowley, and Gerald Fitzgeral). In the affray tomahawks were n-ed. and Meldruoi was so severely woundea that be die t while being brought to the Dunedin Hospital. His body is now at Ontram, where the inquest is to be held. Constable vicKenzie arrested Fitzgerald and Crowley, who wi lbs brought to Dunedin this evening. White is not apprehended. Last night'’Detective Bam and a constable were dispatched to Nenthnrne, and Inspector Weldon sta.ted tor that pi ce this morning. Besides the police already mentioned, the constables at Mosgiid and Macraes are also taking part in the search for White.

At Napier, yesterday, two men and an ex-army otbcer were acquitted on a charge of robbery from a dwelling bouse near I arawera. The case was as clear as day on the prisoners’ own confession, but it transpired that the confession was obtained by a promise given by the arresting constable that if they showed where a watch was hoiden they should be liberated. Without toe informs ion contained j n the confession she charge could not have hi-en proved; and -ns Judge told he jury 10 dismiss the contorsion from their minds.
