FRANCE AND CHINA.
Paris May 11. Telegrams f-nm Tonqnin state that numerous skirmishes o; late have taken place between the French »roopa and a large force of Anamese pirato, culminating in a battle which extended over four days. The French were ultima'eh victorious, and their loss was mcon- iderable. It is believed that the natives suffered heavily. London. May 12.
In its i sue this morning the Times publishes a te egrnm from its special correspondent announcing that a treaty has been concluded at Tientsin between France and China for the ci ssation of hostilities and ihe settlemen:. of the Tonqnin difficulty. By the terms of the treaty it is agreed that China stall recognise a Frenon protectorate over Tonqnin and Annum with the e<iatiuv frontiers, and that the towns of Kuanghsi, Quang, Tung, and Zunnan, shall be opened to international trade. It is also agreed that the French Government shall waive its claim to a war indemnity. The Chinese Government has accepted a French p: electorate over Tonqnin and An nara, and have opened the southern provinces of China for general trade. No indemnity has to be paid. The treaty has been signed.
