SUN SPOTS.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our corresjiondents.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir —Last Friday morning, 25th April, about ten minutes to 9 o’clock, I was going h-nv; fmm the township,, and noticed a very peculiar looking cloud hanging or hovering on the hill side behin i my house. On reaching wi hin fifty yards of my house the cloud became greatly agitated, flying a .out swiftly in different directions, an I increasing Wonderfully in density ami size. I was now in the midst of it* and having a young horse that I could not leave. I called 'out to some members of my family to come down ,to me. On their arrival they each expnssed surprise at the smell of something burning, stating that io smelt like elastic or gum boms burning. My own impression was that the house was on fire, and that the betiding' or snipe woollen material had been smouldering, and had su Men y burst out in great volumes of smoke. The sun had now commenced to show over the hill, having the appea anoo of red fire, and ou i s di k I distinctly saw a black spot the size of the palm of a child’s hand. I was struck with wonder ..at such an unusual occurrence. The fog c’earing away I procured a piece of smoked glass, and looking at the sun through it the spot w's quite visibb, but appeared about a quarter of the size to that seen with the naked eye. I should have liked Dr Hector or some, other scientific person to have’ witnessed what I saw. PS.—Should you think the above will be interesting to your readers you are at liberty to publish it.—l am. etc. ,S. Welsford.* Clyde, May Ist, 1884.
