(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT), . Dunedin, February 28, 7.45 p-m. A gold bearing reef haa been discovered in the 640 feet level of th« Deep Level Cross Mine at the Thames. This is the greatest depth where nnmistakeably auriferous lode .has-been traced' in the district, and the discovery is regarded as one of deepest importance. :It is said that land in St. Kilda has depreciated 50 per cent during the paat two or three years. There will probably be a monster meeting next week in connection with Land Board and dummyism. A lad named Felmera has been suffocated falling into an uncovered cesspool. Yesterday, at Wanganui, a three-year -old child named Gifford was drowned by falling into a-ditch ar Nelson. Yesterday a man named Lalley was drowned in the river Brusnerton. Yesterday, Derritt, the jockey, sued Lance, the owner, for LIOO for wrongful dismissal, and plaintiff was nonsuited. Severe floods, and damage is expected in New River Valley, Southland. Telegrams from the up-country districts report heavy rains from Kingston to the Elbow » The railway has been washed away, at Nokamai and Parrowa, and the line is under water at tha Elbow. A warning has been sent to the settlers to remove the live stock.' Two fatal fires are reported, one from Masterton and the other from Auckland. A man and a boy were burned in their beds. The Land Board to-day unanimously refused to issue licenses to deferred payment settlers who were suspected of dummyism, and the chief commissioner was instructed to proceed against Messrs Smith and Gellibrand for illegally depasturing sheep on the land. ■'The weather was beautifully fine for the opening of the volunteer prize firing at Auckland to-day. Sir Robert Douglas died at Wanganui today, he was in the last Parliament as mem ber for Marsden.
