' Amongst those candidates who presented themselves for the entrance examination of the New Zealand University, we notice the name of W. Chappie (son of J. C. Chappie, of Tiger Hill, who is third on the list for the preliminary examinati-.n. At the annual meeting of subscribers to the Tuapeka Hospital a discussion ensued on what one member styled the invidious position members of committee were in who tendered for articles supplied the institution. Eventually a resolution was carried that no committee-man be a contractor to tender for supplies, or that the tender be not accepted. The Rev. J, Lothian will hold Divine Service on Sunday first as follows Ida Valley, 11.30 a.m ; Blacks, 3 p.ro ; Alexandra, 7.30 p.m. In response to a circular from V. Pyke, Esq., re the Dunedin Benevolent Asylum, the Alexandra Borough Council at its last meeting voted the sum of L 6 6s. to the funds of that institution. The shearers and emp’oyees on Earn scleugh run gave a ball on the evening of the 31st ult, in the wool shed. Between 30 and 40 persons were present, including a good number of the fair sex. Dancing was commenced about 10 p m., and kept up till about 4 o’eloek in the morning. Mr W Brosnau officiated as M. C. The music was supplied by M essrs Delaney and M ‘Parlaue, and everything passed over smoothly, ail enjoying themselves. So far as is yet understood a cricket match between picked elevens from the Vincent and Maniototo Counties is to be played at Blacks on Saturday, the 16th inst. Harvesting has already commenced in the district. The lata fine weather has much improved' the appearance of the oat and wheat crops, and the harvest it is now expected will be much better than was at one time thought for. The turnip crops, however, are looking very bad, while with but few exceptions the potatoes, through being so frequently frosted, will be all but a failure. Mr Fache directs an to call special attention to his auction advertisements which appears in another coinmn. At the first statutory meeting of the Clyde School Committee held in the Schoolhouse on Friday evening last, Mr Hickson was appointed Chairman, and the Rev. Mr Clinton Secretary. A meeting of the shareholders in the Welcome Claim, Obelisk Range, is convened for to-morrow evening, the 9th February, at 7 p m., at Croasan’s Hotel,, Bald Hill Flat. We have received complimentary tickets for the first concert of the season, to be given by the Cromwell Musical Union this evening in the Cromwell Athenaeum. From a perasal of the programme, which combines selections from the H.M.S Pinafore, and a number of other instrumental and vocal pieces, and from the well-known ability of many of the performers added to the very excellent management we shall look for a great musical treat, and one worth attending.
