DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL

The twenty-second annual meeting of the subscribers to the above Institution was held in the Library Hall on Saturday, February 2nd. Mr J. 17. Cambridge (VicePresident) occupied the chair, and having explained the object of the meeting, called on the Secretary to read the report of the retiring committee, <P«dlr George Facfae, Secretary, then read as jows t jgMNTY-Fmsr Annual Report or the kulß Committee of Management. the Subscribers. , Gentlemen,— In accordance with the usual custom, your Committee beg to lay before you their annual report, combining that also of the Treasurer and Resident Surgeon. These latter reports are prepared with that amount of care, and enter so minutely into details, that anything your Committee •night feel disposed to say respecting them would be superfluous. They content themselves accordingly by drawing your special attention to them. One item, however, in the Treasurer’s report, viz,, “Bazaar,” your Committee deem worthy of more than passing notice, as by it the no inconsiderable sum of £143 8s 9d was realised, and they think that special thanks are due to all those ladies and gentlemen who carried it through to so successful an issue. Inter alia vour Committee may here remark that it is contemplated by the Alexandra residents to get up a bazaar in aid of the Institution daring the cunent year. Regarding the internal management of the Institution, your Committee have every reason to be well pleased, the officers have been attentive to their respective duties, and have given entire satisfaction alike to the patients as to the Committee. Through the resignation, however, of Dr Wardale, who was elected to the Invercargill Hospital, the very expensive, and by no means agreeable, duty ot electing another surgeon was necessitated during the year, and of six candidates for the position the choice fell on Dr Lewis, the present occupant of the office. Your Committee during the past year has been considerably exercised r«garding the two chronic patients M urdock and Perris, in consequence of the very heavy expense they entailed on the Institution, and with the view of relieving the Institution of them, correspondence was opened with Vincent Pyke, Esq., M.H.R. for the Dunstan District, and his assistance sought to get them admitted into the Dunedin Benevolent Asylum. However, the Committee of that Institution refused to receive them ; the Governmentjwas then appealed to for relief in some shape, and after a great deal ot correspondence from both your Committee and Mr Pyke, the Government agree to in additon to the subsidy of £ for £ on subscriptions, to give £1 per week per man. This arrangement your Committee deem a satisfactory one, and trust it will meet with the approval of the subscribers. Your Committee during the past year have expended nearly £IOO on furniture and repairs. Little, therefore, under that head will be required during the coming year. Despite the dull times, and the very general scarcity ot money, your 'Committee have been most baudsomely supported by all classes ; indeed, so liberal have been the donations that your Committee have been enabled not only to clear •off an indebtedness of some £lo*2 3s 9d, with which they started, but to leave for the-r successors a cash balance of £lO5 12- Ud. - In conclusion, -yonr Committee desire to thank alb those ladies and gentlemen for the kind and liberal support accorded them •during their term of office, and have rut to express the hope their successors will Jneet -with similar success. •; Your (loramittee now beg to tender you their resignations. Signed by order. George Facuk, Secretary. Mr J. E Stevens (Hon. Treasurer! now read the following balance-sheet and stately ent Treasurer’s Balance-Sheet for 1883. Dr. £ s. d.
