At the Education Board to-day grants were made to the below named districts for buildings—Alexandra, LlO ; Gimmerburn, L 3 ; Clyde, L 6 Iss ; It v/as decided to establish a new school at Lowbnrn. A slight shock of earthquake was felt at Timaru yesterday. A man named Kobt. Forchan died of apoplexy in police cell at Auckland yesterday. At the Education Board to-day Mr Mackenzie gave notice of motion for reduction of staff and expenses of Board, and for abolishment of committees. A big fire occurred at Auckland yesterday, by which eight houses were destroyed, doing damage to the extent of LSOOO. Lord Eoseberry telegraphed that he will not visi New Zealand. The unemployed at Christchurch have declined so mean a pittance as 4s 6d i-er day as offered by lie Government. Today the Government has refused to raise the rate, and the Committee of the uuem ployed have resigned. A skeleton of a human being was found on Saturday at Dead Man’s Reach, near Beaumont, but quite beyond identification. Salvage is first favourite for Auckland Cup ; 3to 1. Tim Whiffler; 4to 1, 'Welcome Jack ; and Sir Bedovore, sixes. At the salu of Crown Lands to-day, Wm. Lcnsk, Tiger Hill, was purchaser of two sections of about 240 acres, at 325. Father Moreau, very well known to all old Otago lesidents, died yesterday at Wanganui. He was 71 years old, and was highly respected by persons of all creeds. The crops in South Canterbury are reported to bo looking promising, and the may be said of the Lawrence district.
