Every section of the Press speak very highly of the entertainment. Mr Fache reports having had a fairly successful sale of groceries, crockery, and sundry stock on Saturday last on account of Mr R. L, Begg, and announces that on Saturday, the 29th inat,, he will dispose of the balance of tho stock, also of tbe whole of Mr Begg's household furniture and effects, at his private residence.. Mr J. B. Wingfield, tho local agent of the Bank of New Zealand, Alexandra, leaves to-day on a well-earned leave of absence for a month. Wo wish him a pleasant holiday and a safe return. Dame rumor speaks of Hymen's altar being visited during the tour ; it such is the case, wo can guarantee him a doable welcome on his return. Tho Cromwell races take place on Wednesday and Thursday next, the 26th and 27th inst. Owners of horses in this part of the district should bear in mind that general entries close, and the balance of tho Derby sweep must be paid to-morrow evening, tho 22nd inst. The privileges in connection with tho Cromwell Races realised LII 9 6s, Mr James Lawrence being the purchaser of tho grand stand and booth. The County Chairman requests that holders of County vouchers hearing date prior to the 30th September, should present them for payment. We had thought that the complaint of which so much is heard, tightens the chest (money) was general. The above request, however, disabuses our mind. Our local Postmaster notifies that Christ* mas Day and New Year’s Day will bo observed as close holidays ; on those days and that on Boxing Dav the Post and Telegraph Offices will lie open for only one hour in the morning, from 9 to 10. A most destructive thunderstorm, accompanied by hail and rain, raged on and around Waikouaition Friday last, doing an enormous amount of damage to growing crops and fruit. Tho hailstones are de- ■ scribed as being very large, five piece* gathered weighing over a pound avoirdupois. Mrs T. C. Worth and Mr Thomas Stanbrook, both well-known in this district, returned to Dunedin from the old country by the steamship Tongaviro. Though rather late in the day we now notice the receipt of the first number of the Australian Graphic, a new illustrated journal, published in Sydney. It is got up on the same lines as the Home paper of the same name,the illustrations and letter-press alternating on each page, the latter is varied in the stylo and well printed. Tho illustrations are from an entirely new process, invented by a Mr S. H. Crookor, formerly of Railton, Tasmania, but now of Sydney; the plates being glass. We have placed the copy received on the table of the Clyde Public Library, and can recommend it to the public attention. We augur for the Australian Graphic a successful career. The amount of property-tax paid throughout the colony to Saturday night amounted to L 945.000, which is within LfinOO of the Treasurer’s estimate. It is expected that fully an additional 1.10,000 will be paid. Several large cheques were paid in ou Saturday, amounting to L 9 .100, Mr Fache announces the sale to-morrow nt the privileges in connection with the coming race meeting on the Clyde Eaoecourse.
