At the last mooting of the Tnapeka County Council, on consideration of ■ a request by the Tuapeka Hospital Committee for a donation, the Chairman (Mr Oudaiie) threw out a suggestion, that if acted upon, would not alone have the desired effect of affording the relief asked for, but would relieve the Council of the responsibility and onus of diverting its funds from what a many are apt to think is its natural channel.' The suggestion was to the effect—“ That out of all monies expended by the County on labor, whether by contract or otherwise, a small sum should bo deducted for the hospital.” In the correspondence columns of the Tuapeka Times the question is being ably handled, the writers all favorably considering it, one hoping that the Council will insert in their conditions of contracts a clause giving power to contractors to retain a small percentage out of wages paid. On the eve of the meeting of the Vincent County Council we refer to the subject, hoping that body will consider itThis is no use denying a tact that is patent to all, that the class of, people, for whose sole benefit up-country hospitals are kept up and maintained, and who reap the whole benefit, give but little or nothing, and any plan that would shift a portion of the burden of maintenance on to their shoulders would be nothing but fair and equitable.
