HAWEA FLAT.
(From our own Correspondent. ) K irti> Frost has had a perfect hold in this din rict nt late. Ploughing operations have been at a standstill for ihe past week, and faim work in general very dull. We have experienced more frost this season than [ we have had for the last three years , and it is rumoured by some of the knosving ones that the ground will yield better crops this season in consequence. Our school still continues to flourish, and the average attendance is as good as can be expected until some of Ihe land is settled on that has been declared open f'T selection lately ; but f fear ihe perpetual lease system is not likely to be ' ’ten advantage of in this district to any ; r at extent. he annual public meeting of the Progress I ommittee was held on the7thinst., the business being to elect a new Committee, and hear the report of the retiring one. The balance-sheet shows to the credit side the sum of £1 Is, and other sums not collected. A synopsis of the ri port goes to say -“That the functions of the Progress C mmittee are purely optional, and consequently a direct taxation on chose interested in carrying out its objects. Yet while taking into consideration the benetits that the district has derived through its being in existence, it would he wise to still support it and aid to its memheis. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the new Committee elected in the usual way. l cannot close without saying a few words about the late Cminty election, as several important facts have come to light through it. The first is that toe people have been woke up to a sense of their duty, and are determined to have a voice n the local government, in spite of the expressed anxiety of the Cromwellites to take all the trouble off our hands and nominating one of themselves to do the work and shoulder the honour—if honour there he in having M.C.C. tacked on to the tail of one’s name. The second and not the least significant fact is that we are perfectly satisfied that there are amongst us men of sufficient ability and consciousness to take upon themselves the dnty of County Councillor. We have elected a genfc’eman irrespective of the blandishments of our Cromwell friends, and I, with the rest of his neigh hours, have little fear but that he will prove himself a ciedit to the district he re presents. For some time past there has been an idea of starting a Good Templars’ Lodge here. Some time since several gentlemen made an attemp', but did not go through it, hut with this second attempt I am nearly safe in saying it will be a success, as it is now in the hands of a lady noted for her determination, and who is in fact a pushing individual when she sees an opening. 1 wish the project every success, as if it has no other effect it will give some parties an idea of how to behave at our public meetings. Your own has been a“ked to enrol, but judging from the number of names already enrolled, T fear I will have no one left to drink with; therefore, I demur for a time at least. Ju[y 14 th, 1883.
