DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.
j The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of Management was held on Monday evening last, the 9th inst. Present : Messrs B. Naylor, Esq. (President), J. U. Cambridge (Vice-President), Sims, Holt, Jeffery, J. E. Stevens (Treaaurer), and George Fache (Secretary). The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence as follows was read: To Mr R. L. Begg, being an invitation by the Committee to Mr Begg to hear from him the particulars of the charges he has to make against their dealing with tenders. From Mr Begg in reply, declining to accept the invitation. Fiona Dr. Wardale, tendering his resignation of (Resident Surgeon, in consequence of bis appointment to the Invercargill Hospital. During discussion on the correspondence to and from Mr Begg, Mr Stevens said he apparently was misunderstood at the last meeting. He did not complain of Mr Begg saying that the Committee had accepted the lowest tender, as they were supposed to he the best judges as to which tender was most beneficial to the Institution, and they were not bound to accept the lowest or any tender. In the instance, however, complained of, after having carefully scrutinised the two tenders, he was prepared to say the one accepted was, taking it as a ■whole, the lowest and most beneficial to the Institution ; but what he complained of was Mr Begg asserting that he had had the opportunity of comparing the two ten lers. He (Mr Stevens) was perfectly sure that by none of the officers of the Institution had Mr Begg been given an opportunity of seeing the tenders. The statement must, therefore, be untruthful, or that he must have obtained them in some unherhand manner. Eventually it was resolved—That as Mr Begg declines to give any explanation of the charges made by him, tbe Committee conclude same are groundless fabrications, and beneath further notice. Resolved —That Dr. Wardale’s resignaon be accepted, subject to the customary three months’ notice, and to be informed by the Secretary that every effort will be made to obtain another Surgeon, and on that being accomplished Dr. Wardale can then leave for his new sphere of duties. Resolved —That advertisements be inserted in the Wellington Times, Lyttelton Times. Daily Times, and Dunstan Times, inviting applications for the office of Surgeon, Resolved-That in consequesce of a full attendance of members of committee, the fixing of the salary for the Surgeon be deferred till Saturday evening, at 7.30 p.m. Tho Visiting Committee reported that everything was working smoothly and satisfactorily in the institution.
