FIRE AT ALEXANDRA.
On Sunday morning last a six-roomed cottage in Limerick street, Alexandra, owned and occupied by M r J. Simmonds, was totally destroyed by fire. The alarm was given about 5.30 a.m , and notwithstanding the early hour in a very short time most of the inhabitants had mustered on the spot. There was a good supply of water available, but as the cottage was constructed of wood and iron, and the fire had a good hold, it was at once seen that it was impossible to save it, and the efforts of those present were devoted to prevent the fire from spreading. On the east side a small gar.leu separated the burning building from the residence of Mrs Morris, which wag consequently comparatively safe ; but, the west side of the building was touching the large stone, premises recently erected l>y Mr Simmon Is, and which foms so conspicuous an object from the bridge. This bull ling, use I as ast re and Temperance Hotel, was in great dan .er for some time, as there was a doorway in the end next to tre fire and it was only by (be most vigorous efforts on the part of those present that the tiro was confined to the budding in which it originated. As to the origin of the fire very little is known Mr Sirarnonds states that he got dp several times during the night attending on his wife, who was unwell, and that he kept a fire burning in the store. Towards morning he lay down and fell fist asleep, and did not awake until the place was in flames. Mr and Mrs Sunmonds had barely lime to escape from the building, leaving their clothes behind them, which, together with all the furniture, was consumed. The house and furniture was insured in the Union Office for £250, but Mr Simmonds estimates his loss at about £4 'O. This township has hitherto been singularly free from tires, the above being the most serious one that has taken place during the twentyone years of its existence.
