(From our own Corrtspondent.) nuxKDix, December 21, 7 55 p.m. About 300 persons were present at the ■banquet to Sir Julius Vogel last night ■which passed off most successfully. A man named John M‘lvory waa found dead in his office near the Star Hotel, Blenheim. At the wool sales, at Chiistchurch, prices suffered a decline and an unusually large number of lots were withdrawn. The sale of pastoral leases at Invercargill, yesterday, did not attract a large attend anve of buyers. In only one instance was it over the upset price. At the Land Board yesterday, application of Hairns and Cockbnrn, to purchase at Earnslaw was heard The Board expressed on opinion that Cockbnrn was prioi appli\c*nt, and resolved to recommend Government to that effect. Mr Stout gave notice of motion that the Inspector should report on subject of “ Dummyisra," to ascertain if i ■ .any truth in reports to that effect. It is reported that Mr Conn'dly will reel lieve Mr Dick of the Postmaster General- ' frbio.The Wellington has sailed from Giasgow j;. with 3 T 9 emigrants. ■ The exhumation of the bodies of Hugh Hamilton and the child resulted in the fact that neither bodies contained any trace of strychiuine. It was found that the fracture of Hamilton’s skull was more extensive and serious than had been anticipated. Mavigator is first favorite for Champion Race at 7 to 4, Commotion and Darebin come next, A big fire eccnrred in Messrs Hermon’s ;--Law & Co., chemists, Melbourne, this morning. The damage is very heavy. At the Education Board to-day, it was . resolved to subsidise the school at Earn- ■ scleugh on consideration that the settlers erect school building. Eleven pounds was voted to the Nevis Committee for completion of school building.
